In the words of the song that accompany this one of a kind race, ‘twas on the ninth of Joon (sic) that a team of Run-Fast athletes lined up with more than 4000 others to compete in the 34th edition of the Blaydon Races.
Winner of the 2013 race Boniface Kongin was back to defend his title along with Peter Emase, who won the event in 2012. Joan Chelimo and Gladys Yator represented the women’s team, a first time to Blaydon for them both.
Ryan McLeod of Tipton Harriers set the initial pace very high, leading until caught and overtaken by the young Run-Fast athletes. Closely matched over the 5.9 mile course, Emase and Kongin ran pretty much side by side, Emase pushing ahead with around one mile to go and beating his team-mate by 14 seconds in 26:34. The ladies ran an even closer race with Chelimo edging Yator out with just metres of the race left, finishing 14th and 15th overall.
